After decades of negotiation, the ocean finally has a voice in international law. The Ocean BiodiversityTreaty has been officially signed — a groundbreaking step toward protecting nearly half our planet: the international waters known as the high seas.

What does this actually mean for our ocean - and for us?

  1. Countries can now create marine protected areas (MPAs) in international waters;
  2. Activities that could harm marine life must undergo environmental impact assessments.;
  3. Benefits from marine resources must be shared more fairly and equitably.

This is more than just policy. It’s a global commitment to protect marine biodiversity, support climate resilience, and center equity in how we care for our blue planet. It’s a historic milestone — and a powerful step forward in the fight to heal our oceans.

We celebrate alongside our partners at SeaTrees who work tirelessly to restore marine ecosystems - from mangrove forests and seagrass meadows to kelp beds and coral reefs. These ecosystems are the lifelines of ocean health and community well-being.

Why this matters now more than ever?

The Ocean Biodiversity Treaty helps protect vast marine areas where countless species live and migrate. And it strengthens the same ecosystems that SeaTrees helps to restore — ensuring that local communities and marine life alike can thrive.

This is a powerful reminder that global policy and local restoration go hand in hand. One can't win without the other.

So yes, let’s celebrate.

But let’s also remember: A treaty is only as strong as the action that follows it.
Together — through smart policy and hands-in-the-water restoration — we can turn the tide for our ocean.
